The way we perceive people has always interested me.
As someone who can't manage to connect to humanity,
I have found myself observing my experiences with people like a study.

Author's Foreword.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Even if this "study" seems to frame my world view as rather "inhumane"
and possibly a bit too literal for comfort, I do wish to clarify I am not without care.

I perceive the world differently than the average person, that has unfortunately been made clear
to me many many times before. My mindset towards people is not led by emotions,
rather I tend to think as well as act on my logical mindset,

even if I can admit I am not always correct, I am only human.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I do not carry feelings of true hate or judgement towards another, I get uncomfortable when the
people around me judge the ones close to them, or even complete strangers.

I see humans like how people may see the average animal, some are lovable,
some are not quite.

Other people have other animals they like, and animals all have their own ways of functioning,
some can get along, some can not

Fortunately, I am quite the animal person. I can't get myself to truly hate them for their nature,
this includes humans.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

My words do not come from a mind of superiority, if anything I feel below those around me in most ways.

Which is why individuals expressing some form of below standard behaviour is dissapointing.
How can people be worse at being human compared to someone who doesn't even feel human?

Even if I value people as a study, I also know they are humans, and should be treated as such, including myself.

Similarly to watching an animal documentary, or allowing a pet into your home,
you can't help yourself but care for a living creature.

1. Purpose of the study.
How could this study of humanity benefit you?

If i'll be realistic, to many, this study may be worth nothing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Most people perceive life the way they do,
and do not give it much second thought on why things are the way they are,
or they simply answer these philosophical questions without much details involved.

Besides, this is a one person study, it depends on the individual if my perspective
might be severely flawed or not, and I am aware my perspective is not common.

However I have in fact come up with a few purposes for reading this study,
or potentially parts of it, and perhaps even consider starting your own.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Character creation:
This study will deal with the details of how certain things can be seen
within the complex boundaries of the human mind, or at the very least my
own way of seeing it.

Topics as simple as shape language and the meaning of colours to how individuals
may perceive others will be discussed. These topics can definitely help you figure
out the ins and outs for a fictional character,

or perhaps atleast support a concept towards a more thought out story, if that is your goal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Self awareness:
Learning more about oneself can help an individual in many ways. So if you learn
why you think or see things a certain way...

It can definitely support your mindset, sense of self and perspective too! Or atleast
make you feel like you can understand yourself a little better.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Knowledge:
Whether you believe my point of view or not, you can't deny that reading someone's
study certainly makes you learn something.

It doesn't quite matter if what all you learn is that the writer might be out
of its mind, or that you genuinely agree with me and and my study makes you think.
But that is all dependant on the reader.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Interest:
Not everything needs a solid reason, if you are simply interested in some of
the topics I discuss that is more than enough of a purpose as well.

For me personally, this is written purely out of interest. The topic of the
human brain and how it may or may not work has always intrigued me.

And the pondering about the human psych has been a constant reality for me,
it is how I perceive the world. The study and its function does not quite
matter to me. What matters to me is that this study was made for enjoyment.

2. Basic understanding of shapes.
How and why do we perceive shapes certain ways?

I feel like the average artist already knows these principles:

Round is friendly, inviting and positive. Square is stable, strong and confident. Triangle is sharp, aggressive and strict.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

These basic ideas of shapes are something frequently used in character design.

Often following the lines of the protagonist character being circular or square,
and the antagonist character being triangle.

(or if they're feeing really original, unexpected shapes. To mix things up a notch.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------

However these fundamentals play much more of a role in our day to day life
than you would generally expect. It affects our relationships with our
family, friends or even strangers.

Expectations are constantly made simply by a small glance of one person's
general shape. Commonly, people with larger, sharper or rougher figures
tend to scare us off.

While rounder, smaller and curvier figures are more welcoming,
or even seen as less "superior" because they seem less intimidating.

Even if this is just a small part of what shapes our opinions,
it's still very much crucial.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I think we can all agree that the most important and recognizable shapes are
circle, triangle and square.

Every shape surrounding it atleast somewhat expresses similarities in these
3 completely diverse shapes. Therefore I will only focus on these three
in this section.

Since all the other shapes surrounding it will likely be easily comparable to
the psychological effect these 3 shapes can have.

I will list up all the emotions and feelings connected I can find of what
these shapes make the average individual feel, and make a short personal
analyses as for why that may be the case.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Circle:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Image of a circle
Approachable, Positive, Love, Unity, Community, Infinite, Protective, Feminine, Safe, Persuasive, Friendly, Nurturing, Empathetic, Generous, Stabilizing, Connection, Wholeness, Endurance, Movement, Perfection, Warmth, Comfort, Sensuality, Completion, Harmony, Soft, Mild, Caretaking.

It's clear that individuals consider the circle the most welcoming and warm of shapes.
Feeling safe and inviting, stable in a way that things can move around
yet not be affected.

The roundnesss could be considered cute or friendly due to these facts.
If we would make this circle and oval for example, it would lose it's roundness.

Therefore it will lose the traits such as perfection and movement.
But the smoothness and round attributes will still likely provide a welcoming appearance.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Square:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Image of a square
Stability, Balance, Strength, Professionalism, Efficiency, Tradition, Equality, Honesty, Organized, Detailed, Knowledgeable, Analitical, Patient, Preserving, Logical, Containment, Security, Solid, Reliability, Order, Safe, Dependable, Tenacious, Independence.

Squares are considered professional and perfect, in a way it is reliable.
It can not move around, therefore there is no such thing as something unexpected.

People like that kind of reliability because we are used to working with a certain routine.
Squares suggest this routine can not be disturbed.

If you'd make it a rectangle, depending on which side it is on, it could either
make this feeling less or more reliable due to its stability or lack there of.

Let alone if we'd make this shape a diamond, a diamond shape still presents a square,
however it has the bad attributes of a triangle. Which would take away most of it's stable traits.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Triangle:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Image of a triangle
Mystery, Power, Sharpness, Stability/Instability, Energy, Aggression, Tension, Conflict, Leader, Focused, Decisive, Ambitious, Competitive, Masculinity, Dynamic, Strength, Law, Science, Direction, Religion, Danger.

Triangles gets seen as the most unreliable shape of all, due to the sharpness likely.
It however does present power, which often times is threatening as well.

However it also can be considered stable, unless it is on one of it's edges. If we
were to make the triangle longer it would worsen the already negative traits.

Making it come across as more sharp and damaging. However if we flatten it,
it will progressively become less threatening, making it more of a confident
and focused shape rather than perceived as an actual danger.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What is most important in recognizing how shapes affect us?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Take a second look at why a shape makes you feel a certain way, and observe
how changing this shape changes how you view it, how mixing these shapes and
traits can effectively change appearance as a whole.

Humans are beyond complicated, they will never just be a couple of shapes together.
But taking a look at them step by step in a simplified manner is already a step
forward to figuring out why we could perceive a certain person or thing a certain way.

For example, the average person tend to like babies, or at least is not intimidated by them,
they are chubby and round. Adults will become far less "cute" and approachable with
their more complex structure and sharper shapes.

It is just easier to realize why this is when looking at the difference of
motion between a circle and a triangle or square, even if this differs for each individual.

3. Basic understanding of colours.
How and why do we perceive colours certain ways?

Colours have a whole collection of emotions that get connected to them,

and similarly to shapes there are endless versions of them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

With this section I won't go into too much detail either, no fancy colour names
and no all too intense studies. We generally don't really focus on those details,

atleast not as much that it is worth studying in detail. Colour can heavily
affect our opinions too, and can actually say a lot about another individual.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Red:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Red
Power, Passion, Energy, Fearlessness, Strength, Excitement, Danger, Warning, Anger, Defiance, Pride, Aggression, Pain, Love, Enthusiasm, Overpowering, Overwhelming, Warmth, Dominance, Annoyance, Hunger, Intensity, Stimulating, Adventurous, Leadership, Destruction, Urgency, Romance.

Generally viewed as intense, People who have a lot of red in their appearance could
potentionally come across as intimidating or a handful. Or on the flip side, romantic and loving.

The more red a person has in their warderobe the more they are confident or passionate
I assume.

Red is such an easily noticeable colour, people who wear a lot of red
likely wish to be noticed and like attention, or are more aggressive in nature.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Orange:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Orange
Courageous, Confidence, Warmth, Innovation, Friendliness, Energy, Deprivation, Frustration, Frivolity, Immaturity, Sluggishness, Igorance, Controversial, Bright, Fun, Playful, Interest, Anticipation, Alert, Freedom, Pleasure, Youth, Optimism.

Similar to red, also very much intense but less intimidating.
It is a colour that can show a more approachable kind of intense personality.

However orange also gives a bit of caution. It is uncommon in large scale,
large amounts can be intimidating and overwhelming. However in reasonable amounts
it can be very charming and unique.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Yellow:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Yellow
Optimism, Warmth, Happiness, Creativity, Intellect, Extraversion, Irritationality, Caution, Fear, Anxiety, Frustration, Cowardice, Energetic, Memorable, Irresponsible, Unstable, Positive, Bright, Curiosity, Clarity, Hopefulness, Lightness, Youthful, Spontaneity.

Generally viewed as positive, rather mild. It is decently liked all around,
not too common nor uncommon in our surroundings.

Not many people tend to have a problem with it unless they do not enjoy
the positivity attached to it or when this colour is a more desaturated and "gross" version of itself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Green:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Green
Health, Hope, Freshness, Prosperous, Nature, Growth, Boredom, Stagnation, Enervation, Envy, Blandness, Sickness, Fertility, Wealth, Soothing, Relaxing, Guilt, Rebirth, Stability, Endurance, Abundance, Balance, Harmony, Trust, Acceptance, Luck, Safety.

Very well liked and generally enjoyed, often connected to nature. It is familiarized
as something positive by many as it is common in things the average person enjoys,

and it's close relation to blue makes it often a close or main pick as a favorite.
There is not much about green to dislike.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Blue:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Blue
Communication, Clarity, Calmness, Inspiration, Self-expression, Boastfulness, Healing, Secrecy, Unreliability, Reticence, Indecisive, Aloofness, Trustworthy, Loyalty, Dependability, Logical, Serenity, Security, Coldness, Emotionless, Unfriendliness, Uncaring, Unappetizing, Tranquility, Productive, Protection, Peaceful, Purpose.

The most well liked colour of all, to the point it is a lot of people's go to as for
their favorite color. It's inviting because it's the most common colour in daily life, the sky.

It is associated with positivity mainly due to that and it's familiarity, but it's not very
original because of how common it is.

It's connection to masculinity is also a reason people may be either attracted or scared
away by it, but it is hard to hate it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Pink:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Pink
Imaginative, Passion, Tranformation, Creative, Innovation, Balance, Outrageousness, Nonconformity, Flippancy, Impulsiveness, Eccentricity, Ephemeralness, Temporary, Sweet, Playful, Compassionate, Immature, Weak, Sentimental, Youthful, Feminine, Respect, Softness, Gratitude, Calmness.

Close to red, Intense and often seen as cutesy or feminine. People with a pink warderobe
definitely feel more connected by what most people consider girly.

They either have a lot of confidence or quite the opposite. They're often rather
unpredictable. You either like it or dislike it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Purple:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Purple
Decadence, Introversion, Supression, Inferiority, Extravagance, Moodiness, Wisdom, Luxury, Wealth, Spirituality, Imaginative, Sophistication, Royalty, Creativity, Ambition, Mysterious, Nostalgic, Sentimental, Idealism, Excitement.

Most uncommon which can make it intimidating, but also enlightening in some way.
It can open your mind up without it being too confronting.

It is the least intimidating of the more uncommon colours, and this colour often
seems to be a favourite to thoughtful individuals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Brown:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Brown
Humorlessness, Heaviness, Unsophisticated, Sadness, Dirtiness, Conservativeness, Seriousness, Warmth, Earthiness, Reliability, Support, Authenticity, Friendly, Honesty, Simplicity, Wholesome, Dependability, Grounding.

Seen negatively quite often and not particularly much of a colour, however it is
unique enough to cover. It is a rather neutral color that still offers warmth.

Often overlooked and not common to pick as a favourite.
It is a more open-minded and calming colour.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Black:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Black
Oppression, Coldness, Menace, Evilness, Mourning, Heaviness, Sophistication, Security, Powerful, Elegancy, Authority, Substance, Dramatic, Restful, Death, Mystery, Bold, Classic, Confident, Edgy, Elegant, Neutrality, Draining, Depressing.

Neutral, nobody truly fully dislikes it because it offers
a place for our mind and eyes to rest.

However, too much of it can get intimidating and intense in a threatening way. It can drain you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Gray:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour Gray
Unconfident, Dampness, Depression, Hibernation, Lacking energy, Blandness, Timelessness, Neutrality, Reliability, Balance, Intelligence, Strength, Secure, Conservative, Sadness, Unsettling, Moody, Formal, Professional, Practical, Maturity, Security, Authority, Stability.

Most neutral, not as intense as black, not as bright as white.
It could be seen as boring or even dirty in some way,

but it is one of the more calming and approachable of the bunch.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
White:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Colour White
Cleanliness, Clarity, Purity, Simplicity, Sophistiction, Freshness, Sterility, Coldness, Unfriendliness, Elitism, Isolation, Emptiness, Goodness, New, Decluttered, Distant, Neutrality, Minimalism.

Neutral but energized and approachable, we like knowing what is going on
and white can be a very straight forward and truthful colour,

but too much of it can be overwhelming instead of reassuring and calming.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

What is most important in recognizing how colours affect us?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Some things to keep in mind are: tints, variety, saturation, brightness and quantity.
These factors can mix a lot of emotions together, or remove them for that matter.

However it is important to keep in mind that the darker the more negative it tends to come across,
and the more saturation the more intense the emotion will be. Too much will scramble our brains,
too less will make them lose interest.

And once more, this will all differ per person and what colors they identify with.

This study is a work in progress.
